Welcome! I’m Andrew Wharton. Whether you're chasing a personal best, training for your first marathon, or lacing up for the very first time, I'm here to help you run stronger, smarter, and with more confidence.

My coaching is built on three things: scientific understanding, decades of personal experience, and a genuine love of the sport. I hold a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of Otago (1998), majoring in Exercise and Sport Science — so every plan I write is evidence-based and grounded in sound physiology. I don't just tell you what to do; I tell you why.

Beyond the textbooks, I've spent decades putting theory into practice as a high-level Masters runner. I know what it takes to push your limits at any age — and I've made the journey from casual runner to competing at a serious level myself, which gives me real empathy for wherever you are on your own path.

My coaching journey began with club mates, where I've had the privilege of watching runners achieve breakthroughs they didn't think were possible — including an athlete who earned national selection for the 2025 World Trail Running Championships. I'm equally passionate about strength and conditioning and injury prevention, because my goal isn't just to add miles, it's to build resilient runners who last.

And it's not only about performance. Some of the most rewarding coaching I do is with people taking their very first steps as runners. That's the heart of AW Extra Mile — a place where being a beginner isn't something to apologise for. Everyone starts somewhere, and I'd be honoured to start with you.
